Bio-based PE packaging materials

Bio-based PE plastic is made from renewable plant-based resources such as sugar cane or corn or other biological resources, providing a more sustainable alternative to raw materials derived from petroleum.

It offers the same technical advantages as traditional PE with no difference in appearance and it can be used in food grade packaging.

The features of bio-based materials

Perfect for storing food and easily recycled

  • Raw material obtained from natural sources such as sugar cane, corn or other bio-sources

  • Products made using Bio-based PE are still be classified as food grade.

  • It is easily collected in domestic recycling and can be recycled several times with stable quality.

  • It can be recycled in the same stream as fossil based PE.

  • Not to be confused with bio-degradable or compostable plastics as they are only used once and do not support a circular economy.

Assessing the raw material availability

The consumer demand for more sustainable materials continues to grow, which in turns drives research and technical innovation for readily available practical and economical solutions.

Currently, the increase in global demand for Bio-based PE adds pressures to the availability of raw material and therefore, Pont assesses the availability at the time of each new project.

Bio-based PE FAQ's

What is biobased plastic?

Bio-based plastic is made either fully or partially from natural and renewable sources such as sugar cane, corn or other bio-mass. It is a more sustainable option than traditional plastics made from petroleum/fossil based materials.

Is biobased biodegradable?

Bio-based plastics shouldn’t be confused with bio-degradable or compostable plastics. Bio-based plastic is not necessarily biodegradable but it can easily be recycled in the same stream as oil based PE for a circular economy.

What are biobased polymers?

Bio-based Polymers are made either fully or partially from natural and renewable sources such as sugar cane, corn or other bio-mass. They are a more sustainable option than traditional plastics made from petroleum/fossil based materials.

Is biobased plastic recyclable?

Yes, bio-based plastics (plastics that are made using bio-mass rather than petroleum based plastics) can easily be recycled in the same stream as traditional plastics. Not to be confused with biodegradable or compostable plastics which cannot be recycled.
